This single from Whittney Mikkél is an ethereal and somber take on the 1980s hit by Tears for Fears, layering echoing piano with breathy vocals and electronic elements.
Mad World was recorded by Whittney Mikkél in 2013 and had been shelved due to her need to pursue other projects. In 2014, while mastering her debut EP Before the Day, Christopher Brooks fell in love with Whittney's rendition of the 80s Tears for Fears hit, mastered it, and encouraged her to put it out into the world. Now this intimate and beautifully heartfelt recording is available for digital download.
"A great cover stands on its own, as a reinterpretation of the original but not a carbon copy. This version of Mad World does just that with a reinvention of what Tears For Fears originally did. The intro was an enlightening interpretation with some uniquely creative instrumentation." -D Grant Smith, The Appetizer Radio Show
lyrics
all around me are familiar faces, worn out places, worn out faces
bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, going nowhere
and their tears are filling up their glasses, no expression, no expression
hide my head i wanna drown my sorrow, no tomorrow, no tomorrow
and i find it kind of funny, i find it kind of sad
the dreams in which i'm dying are the best i've ever had
i find it hard to tell you, i find it hard to take
when people run in circles it's a very, very
mad world...mad world...mad world...mad world...
children waiting for the day they feel good, happy birthday, happy birthday
made to feel the way that every child should, sit and listen, sit and listen
went to school and i was very nervous, no one knew me, no one knew me
hello teacher tell me what's my lesson, look right through me
look right through me
and i find it kind of funny, i find it kind of sad
the dreams in which i'm dying are the best i've ever had
i find it hard to tell you, i find it hard to take
when people run in circles it's a very, very
mad world...mad world...mad world...mad world...
